Set in 8 acres of peaceful pastures and gardens on the edge of East Grinstead, Great Harwoods Farm has seen some dramatic events and changes since its beginnings at the end of the 19th century.

Originally the homestead for a small 100-acre farm, the house sits directly on the Greenwich Meridian, with half in the Western and half in the Eastern Hemisphere. In some ways, it is lucky that the farmhouse is still standing at all, after a narrow miss by a German bomber in the Second World War. At least three bombs landed just to the north of the house in what is now the front paddock (two of the craters can still be seen).

Thankfully, times are much calmer now and Great Harwoods Farm offers its guests a cosy and relaxing base away from the hustle and bustle. The farmhouse and surrounding barns have been lovingly restored and extended by Ailsa and David Giles, your hosts, who have lived here since 1988.

  • A beautiful location, an excellent reception upon arrival, really nice furnishings throughout the house and room, wonderfully friendly service, and a lovely breakfast. 5 out of 5!

  • I agree with Tim. From the moment I walked in the door I had such a warm genuine welcome, my stay felt like a home from home. Aisla is a wonderful host. My room was lovely, warm and clean with little touches that make the difference. The breakfast was hearty with lots of homemade, local and organic produce. Would definitely recommend and would like to come again. Thank you.

  • For a special weekend we can highly recommend Great Harwood for the warm welcome, comfortable accommodation and delicious breakfast. The homemade jams and bread were excellent. I thoroughly enjoyed a relaxing massage which Ailsa is able to offer in house. Location was very quiet but convenient for visiting East Grinstead and Nation Trust properties nearby. Thank you for a great weekend!

  • We have just spent a weekend at Great Harwoods Farm and it was one of the best bed and breakfasts we have ever stayed in. Clean, comfortable, welcoming - we couldn't have wished for a better stay. Thank you for a lovely weekend. We will definitely be back! Roy Fraser-Watson a week ago This is a wonderful find and was the perfect place to visit. Our host Ailsa, was very welcoming and went out of her way to make us feel at home. The breakfasts were amazing, both the smoked salmon scrambled eggs and the full English breakfast. There was also fresh fruit, juices, cereals etc. Great location near Gatwick Airport and only a short walk into the charming town of East Grinstead Pierre De Rijck in the last week May 10th 2016. During our three nights' stay in this lovely B&B, we appreciated the warm welcome, and enjoyed the hospitality very much, not forgetting the great breakfast of course. The owners David and Ailsa make you feel at your ease and are always available for a friendly chat. The rooms are spacious, cosy and perfectly equipped with all facilities. Set in a perfect location near the beautiful market town of East Grinstead, it was interesting but also great fun exploring the beautiful countryside and features of the High Weald in our MGB. A holiday break we certainly will not forget and therefore highly recommend to everyone visiting Sussex. From Pierre and Aron De Rijck (Kruibeke-Belgium) Thank you Ailsa and David. • • •
